Crew Member Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
