Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
