RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
